Saturday, 4/12/2014, Jim Clark, David Mohammed and Terry Hoffman faced Steve Hoffman, Donald
Waiberman and Alyssa Gehring for a tournament with the pay off being "bragging rites". Simmons Park at 7:30 am start and a 2:00 pm finish with an all even score. Scoring was 1pt./fish, 5pts./slam, 2pts./table fare. Trash fish were -1pt./fish, if a trash-can slam was caught that was 5pts. Since pins and lady fish could become bait they were not to be trash. (The lawyer in me failed to point out that they should not be considered catches for pts.). Team Clark had 1 snook, 1 trout and a pin caught by David and 1 pin caught by Ms. H and Jim had a trout for a total of 5pts. Team Hoffman had a sea bass caught by Mr. H and 2 flounder taken to the table by Alyssa for 5 pts. So all square after about 5-6 hrs. on the water with some great friends brought together by SSA.

One of the best days in 2014 for fishing with the bay loaded with boats and anglers and until Sunday morning no big story from fishing with The Hoffman's. Then Mr. & Mrs. H discussed some  of the day's efforts. Seems after at least 10 years of owning his boat rigged with a Sanchez Bros. tower for driving Jim Clark accidentally killed the ignition and started down the ladder to re-start from the center console. "Jim why not try this black button here on the tower's controls?" Terry asks. From Jim "That doesn't do anything". (And that was with his all knowing, firm voice). "Try it!"  Vvvvrrrroooooooommmm it starts with the same authority! Now I've known Jim for 9+ years and fished with him countless times and consider him to be more than knowledgeable about his vessel. He gets schooled by a girl! And that fellow anglers and SSA followers is why I put Terry on his team, for that once in a life time learning moment that Jim won't soon forget. "And yes, Jim, those diesel fumes are from Terry throwing you under the bus".

A great day on the water indeed. I think having a competition gives a whole new excitement to the a day of fishing. From strategizing on where to go, what bait, and what target fish, it's all part of the experience. Our day started with throwing the net a few times to get some bait at the towers and then we chummed a bit near piney point for some more. On the flats we only saw pinfish but decided to take them anyway. For some reason today I landed most of the fish, including the snook on artificial. No one fell in the water and everyone had a great time. I am ready for the next competition.

First of all, I knew what the button did- I just needed the exercise. Second of all Donald, at the Capt meeting (held at the Winghouse) the rules where established - I think Steve's memory was a little confused as to the rules. As was established on our boat, David was the fisherman, I was the Capt (term used loosely) and Terry was our "eye candy"- who also fished very, very well (putting on her own bait also). After 4 months of being landlocked (because of left knee replacement) it was good to get out on the water for a great time with great company and a little friendly competition BUT "that what our club is all about". We want a rematch.

And I was willing to blame the Sanchez Bros. for not giving you the proper walk-around when you took the boat after the tower was finished. Again, Terry said "Jim said that button did nothing and was shocked when the motor fired". (Hey she has Schooled me plenty in 39 years).      snook crazy
